Delhi Red Fort
Red Fort is the most popular tourist destinations in Delhi and is located near Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. It is called Red Fort because it is made of red sandstone. It came into existence when the Mughul capital was shifted from Agra to Delhi in 1638. This fort is the best living example to India’s history and witness to the struggle for freedom. It was from the Red Fort that the three century long Mughul rule came to an end and thirst Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru announced India as a free nation from the shackles of the British rule.
Red Fort is divided into seven important parts :
Diwan-e-Am, hall of public audience built out of sandstone with platforms made out of fine Italian pietra-dura work. , Diwan-e-Khas, hall of private audience made of white marble supported by carved pillars which once housed the very famous and the most exclusive Peacock Throne, The Hammam, royal bath in Turkish style, Zenana, the then residence for all the royal ladies, Khas Mahal, a three domed mosque, Hayat Bakhsh Bagh, a garden and Naubat Khana or Drum House, an arena for the royal musicians of that time. Of the 14 gates of the Red Fort, the important ones are Mori, Lahori, Ajmeri, Turkman, Kashmiri and the most famous Delhi Gate.
The Red Fort is most visited during evening time when there is a light and sound show that takes place. The show takes you back to the gone by era of the Mughul Empire.
