Old Fort Delhi
Also known as Purana Qila, the 16th Old Fort is situated near Pragati Maidan was built by Sher Shah Suri and Humuyun. Designed by Mughal, Hindu, and Afghan architectures it is spread in 2.41 km and 33.5 m in height, Old Fort is octagonal in shape and was carved out of red sandstone. The fort is believed to be on the grounds of princely state of Indrapratha that witnessed many wars and battles of yester years. Built amidst a scenic beauty of lush green environment, the tourists can take pleasure of boating in the lake of tranquil water of history that is walled with ancient monument from all the sides. The pedal boats available here is a popular source of entertainment among the tourists.
The entry to the fort can be done through three gates: The Bara Darwaza, Humuyun Darwaza and Talaaqi Darwaza. All the gates are huge and very majestically made of red sandstone. There is a superstition behind Talaqi Darwaza which is considered to be forbidden since ages. The fort is also home to one of the most ancient mosque of 16th century. Qila-I-Kuhna mosque is a must visit place which has five richly ornamented arched openings with black and white marble. The mosque has an inscription which says 'As long as there are people on this earth, may this edifice be frequented, and people be happy in it.
