Saint James Church Delhi
St. James Church is located in Old Delhi near Kashmiri Gate. It is believed to be the oldest surviving church of New Delhi. It was built in year 1836 in a western classical design of architecture in a Greek cruciform plan which makes the church resemble to St. Paul Cathedral in London. The dome of the church is crowned by a ball and a cross. The center portion of St. James Church is octagonal in shape with circular columns and poles supporting the big dome. Robert Smith and De Bude were the two chief architect who carried the construction of his classical Renaissance style church.
The church was once damaged very badly during the revolt of 1857. James Skinner who was a soldier in the Marathi Army, son of a Scottish army officer and a Rajput mother came forward and took the responsibility of renovating the church. The grave of Jmaes Skinner lies in front of the altar of this church. St. James Church also contains many other graves of British Commissioners of Delhi including William Fraser.
