Sacred Heart Cathedral Delhi
The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is located near Gol Dak Khana and Gurudwara Bangla Sahib in Connaught Place. The church is the most important Catholic Church of India. Spread in 14 acres of land, the church is situated in between two prominent catholic convent schools from both sides; St. Columbus and Convent of Jesus and Mary.
It was designed by Henry Medd and the influenced by Italian architecture. The foundation stone of the church was laid by the Arcbishop of Agra, Rev Dr. E. Vanni though the idea behind constructing the Cathedral came from Father Luke who belonged to the Fransciscan First Order. The church has beautiful interior with white marble pillars, curved roof, polished stone floors and broad arches which adds on to the ethereal charm in such an attractive setting. The church was built by various donations by rich colonial officers of the British Empire who financed a lot of things that are placed in the church. The main altar of the church was given by Sir Anthony de Mello which is made of pure white marble. Archbishop of Agra presented the church bell and other furniture pieces that increase the splendid beauty of the cathedral even till today.
