Location :Inside Jaipur House, Opposite India Gate, Near UPSC, New Delhi, India.
National Gallery of Modern Art was inaugurated on 29th march, 1954 to ensure quality and recognize standards of excellence in art., develop galleries, organizing exhibitions, to educate and inform about the work of modern art, to create an exclusive library of books, periodicals, photographs, and organize seminars and conferences about the field of art. The collection in the National Gallery of Modern Art consists of around 4000 pieces of paintings, sculptures, graphics and photographs on display not just by Indian artists but also attracts international talent too. The museum falls under The Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Government of India. It encourages artists who are in search of recognition from all over to come under one roof to present their quality work and get appreciated for it and a chance to associate themselves with art which is a passion to those artists. It also has a well stocked library with books and other materials on art as a subject.
Few renowned names associated with this museum are Rabindranth Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Binod Bihari Mukherjee, Ram Kumar Kinkar, Jamini Roy, Yamini Mukherjee and Amrita Shergill. There are few permanent exhibits such as Amrita Shergill's Self Portrait, Two women, Musicians and Bathers; and Jamini Roy's Krishna and Balarama, Kirian, Yasoda & Krishna which are always on display. Where as among the contemporary artists it has works of Maqbul Fida Hussein, Francis Newton Souza, Vivan Sundaram, J Swaminathan, Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh, Bhupen Khakhar and Sayyid Hyder Raza. Among international artists it boasts of Jacob Epstein, Giorgio de Chirico, Peter Lubarda, Henry Moore, Sonia Delaunay, A. Tapies, Robert Rauschenberg, Se Duk Lee, D.C. Daja, George Keyt and Fred Thieler and Kozo Mio.
National Gallery of Modern Art is a heaven for art lovers, artists whose profession and passion is art and for admirers who love is to appreciate an art work. This place has to offer something for everybody.
